Avoiding Heat-Related Health Issues

Heat-related illnesses are a significant health risk for anyone exposed to excessive heat. The most severe and life-threatening heat-related disorders include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat injury and heat syncope. Anyone can experience a heat-related illness, regardless of age, gender, race or athletic status.

What are the Types of Heat Illnesses?

There are different types of heat illnesses, but the main three are heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat Cramps

Heat cramps are a sporadic muscle cramp that can occur when it is really hot outside and you are engaging in vigorous activity. Heat cramps can lead to heat exhaustion and eventually, to heat stroke.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion comes into play when your body starts to overheat and cannot cool down. You may become nauseous and dizzy.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious heat illness. You can get heat stroke after long periods of time in the heat, usually after a strenuous workout. You may experience a headache, fast heart rate, flushed skin, vomiting and even an altered mental state. This often requires medical attention.

What Causes Heat-Related Illnesses?

A combination of factors can cause heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illnesses occur when the body overheats, causing it to lose more fluids than it can replace. They occur when you are in excessive heat for a long time and can happen when there is a higher humidity level.

How to Avoid Heat-Related Health Issues

Heat related illnesses are not something to take lightly. While it is rare, people can die because of heat stroke. The CDC names heat stroke and heat exhaustion as the top two causes of weather-related deaths. It is something to take seriously!

The good news is that there are different ways to avoid heat-related illnesses. They include the following:

Stay Cool

There are many ways to ensure that your body remains cool. You can wear a hat, use an umbrella or bring along a portable fan. You can also put an ice pack in your back pocket and bring ice water everywhere.

Remain Hydrated

To ensure that your body remains hydrated, drink a lot of water, and consume foods with high water content, such as watermelon and strawberries. Avoid caffeinated drinks like sodas when you are being physically active.

Stay Cool + Hydrated and Stay Healthy

Heat related illnesses are very serious, and we should do everything in our power to avoid becoming overheated. It is crucial to stay hydrated, especially when you are outside on a very hot day. Stay in the shade and wear light clothing that will keep you cool. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and save your workouts for when it is cooler. By following these tips, you will remain healthy and be able to support your body throughout the summer months.
